Energy conservation is both a green idea and an economic necessity. Finding new types of energy, exploring new ways to conserve energy are all critical to economic success in todays $100.00+ / barrell for oil economy. Expensive oil is good. It has Canada making a head space shift from energy is "cheap" to energy is "expensive."
This is critical.
People must stop thinking that the norm is large energy intensive homes and vehicles. The person on the street has to start thinking and living in more sustainable energy-lite homes and transportation.
Governments must shift from providing infrastructure (Roads /water / sewage) to distributed networks of homes and business to one where infrasturcture is concentrated in dense areas of mixed-use living connected by commercial / public transportation systems.
Cities built, prior to the turn of the 20th century (1900) were very energy efficent in terms of transportation and building energy consumption. They had to be because energy costs were relatively high.
The concentrated living and working conditions of those times are models of what we as a society need to re-explore to find the mix of current technologies and low impact living that will give competitive advantage to Nova Scotia and Canada.
