Overview

The Power of Green 2007 was a tremendous success!  270 delegates took part in two days of programming and learned from experts in a variety of fields such as climate change, energy effiency and sustainable economic development.

Speakers and Sessions

The keynote speaker was Bill Shireman, CEO of the Future 500 and Global Futures.  During his gala dinner presentation, Shireman showcased the hundreds of companies who have embraced sustainable technologies and innovations, resulting in more successful companies.

Five featured speakers represented their own points of view.  Judy Wicks, from the White Dog Cafe in Phildelphia spoke to a capitvated crowd discussing her journey to entreprenurship and the role sustainable business practices have had in her organization.  Wicks is the co-founder of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies and touched on the experience of that very successful business group.  Gloria Flora, Sustainable Obtainable Solutions, presentd biomimicry and the advances that can be realized by utilizing naturally occuring substances and processes.  Gary Lines, Environment Canada, provided visuals which clearly described the effects of climate change on our natural environment.  Dr. John Nyboer, Simon Fraser University and co-author of The Cost of Climate Policy, discussed the role of fossil fuels in the future of our environment.  Dr. Ron Colman, Genuine Progress Index Atlantic, discussed the state of sustainability using much of the research conducted by GPI. 

The 2007 conference was hosted by the departments of Economic Development and Environment.  Paul Taylor, Deputy Minister of Economic Development, and Nancy Vanstone, Deputy Minister of Environment, discussed what the newly legislated Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act means for Nova Scotia. 

An energy panel offered an opportunity for all conference participants to hear energy experts discuss the newest technologies in their field.  Moderated by Brendan Haley of the Ecology Action Centre, the energy panel featured Blair Hamilton, Vermont Energy Investment Corporation and Ralph Torrie, ICF International. 

A number of concurrent sessions were also offered to conference delegates:

  • Eco Design: Building for a Sustainable Future featured Jean-Guy Chiasson from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Keith Tufts discussing the Seaport Farmers Market, and Frank Cruickshanks from Environment Canada. 
  • Greening the Bottom Line: Best Practices in Business featured Jean-Paul Deveau from Acadian Seaplants, Chuck Cartmill of C-Vision and Gary Johnson from Maritime Paper Products.
  • Human Capital: Adding Value through People featured Dr. Edgar Cahn from the Time Banking Institute, Paul Holden from the Manitoba Government's Employer of Choice Program and Eric Turner from the Province of Nova Scotia's Employer of Choice program. 
  • Moving Towards a Waste Free Economy featured Dr. Richard Ablett from the Atlantic BioVenture Centre, Dr. Raymond Cote from the Eco-Efficiency Centre and Pat MacKen from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Ireland.
  • Importance of Local Capital featured Jeff Moore from Just Us! Coffee Roasters, Dave Wilson from GrowthWorks Atlantic and Michael Arbow from the New Brunswick Securities Commission.
  • Beyond Green: Reinventing our Communities featured Ian Smith from False Creek (the Vancouver Olympic Village), Christoper Sweetnam-Holmes from Eco-cite and Bob Williams from the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council.
